About the Role

The Senior Research Analyst develops projects, obtains funding, and provides technical and strategic advice to the Department of Natural Resources and Heritage for projects in the Vuntut Gwitchin Traditional Territory. The position uses best practices from scientific and Traditional Knowledge perspectives to deliver projects that monitor and study fish, wildlife, and lands and support traditional use of the VGFN Traditional Territory. The incumbent advises on the development and implementation of co-management plans, as well as fish, wildlife, and lands legislation and regulations, and provides analyses of technical documents related to science and policy. Their activities have a long-lasting impact on the stewardship of VGFN fish and wildlife resources.   Reporting to the Natural Resources & Heritage Director, some of the responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to;

  • Department Operations: Consults the North Yukon Renewable Resources Council, colleagues, and VGFN citizens to develop plans and to design projects that use best practices from scientific and Traditional Knowledge to support the sustainability of fish, wildlife, and habitats, and their traditional use by VGFN citizens. Leads the collection, management, and reporting of VGFN’s harvest database.
  • Program Delivery: Coordinates the design and implementation of projects that advance our understanding of the ecology and management of the fish, wildlife, and habitats of the VGFN Traditional Territory, as well as projects that support the traditional economy of VGFN citizens.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Identifies and obtains external funding to support Department projects by preparing proposals, implementing projects, and writing reports.
  • Technical Review and Advice: Provides technical advice and guidance to VGFN regarding the scientific management of fish, wildlife, and habitats; legislative and regulatory management tools; and co-management working alongside boards, other governments, and non-governmental organizations.
  • Communications: Analyzes, identifies, and communicates best practices in the conservation and management of fish, wildlife, and lands in public meetings, co-management meetings, and within VGFN.
  • Emergency Management - Responds to crisis situations of Citizens and consults with appropriate parties to identify and achieve solutions.

  • 4% Northern Community Remoteness Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time.
  • 4% Northern Travel Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time.

What You Bring:
  • Graduate degree in wildlife or fisheries biology, conservation management, environmental studies, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.  
  • Considerable experience managing and delivering conservation or environmental research projects and programs, strategic planning and evaluation, in a northern community.  
  • Experience building partnerships with stakeholders and external contacts to promote and protect fish, wildlife, and habitats.
  • Experience managing and analyzing data and producing technical and nontechnical publications. 
  • Experience developing and delivering community on-the-land programming.  
  • Considerable financial management experience, including budgeting, applying for and administering federal/territorial and other funding programs.
  • Knowledge of fish and wildlife ecology, resource management, land legislation, human-wildlife conflict, and ecological sustainability principles and practices to lead inspections, surveys, and projects.
  • Applies knowledge of legislation, trends, practices and research to fish and wildlife planning and sustainability.
